Community Garden: Worthless bird talk

All the collars have been removed from the visiting and fugitive turkeys.  They have blended in well with the garden turkeys.  All of them seem kind of edgy though.  It is like they know that there is another holiday coming up and that they are the invited guests. Hard to imagine that after all these years they have figured this out.

Mark Spradlin was elected Guthrie's next mayor on Tuesday.

The geese are back and it looks like they brought some extra friends with them.  I have no idea where they kidnapped them.  When you look up you can see flocks or gaggles of geese headed south in a classic V formation but the geese at the park just won’t leave.  I bet that by the time you read this they have changed their minds.  If you have the means to head to warmer climates I would think you would be headed that way by now, but these geese think that a little goose down is going to keep them well insulated.  They just haven’t had enough time to figure out these Oklahoma winters.  They will learn and not make this mistake twice.

Enough worthless bird talk!

Still have a few tomato plants to pull and throw in the compost piles.  Lots of wood mulch to spread around the beds to act as weed suppressors but we may need some more.  I will have to keep my eyes open for some more tree trimmers that are mulching their small stuff.  I also have a trailer load of mulched leaves that I need to take to the garden and put in the raised beds.  The mulched leaves will decompose and provide some heat and moisture control well into the spring.  Many thanks to Mike for the leaves, but I sure wish I could get him to spread them too!  We will have to spread these leaves in all the beds.  We may add a little sand with the leaves to help the soil become less compacted and be real loose.

If anyone out there is interested in helping to build some shelves for the garden please let me know.  They can be built right where we need them or we can transport the wood to any location and then bring it back to the shed.  If it is boring in your workshop and you want something to do please let us know.  At this point the ground is probably too cold to encourage germination unless you have been keeping it covered so now is the time to get ready for the spring and the planting season coming up.  Decide now what you want to plant and get ready to order your seeds.  Most seed companies will not send you the seeds you order too early and when you have leftover seeds remember to mark them well and put them in your freezer.  They will keep for years in this manner.

So start your engines to keep the oil circulating and the gas flowing and to keep the rubber from cracking.
