Both Guthrie Freshmen basketball teams jumped out to quick leads, but Piedmont would go on huge runs to roll past the Jays and Lady Jays, inside the Guthrie High School Gymnasium, Monday evening.
The boy’s team entered the match-up with a 2-0 record with wins over Deer Creek (45-39) and Western Heights (61-17), despite playing with just seven players due to football players still out with the playoff bound team.
Guthrie’s Bailey Nichols scored the first bucket of the game thirty seconds into the game, but Piedmont would then go on a 25-0 run in the next 8:38 to open the game. First year head coach Londaryl Perry was forced to call multi time-outs in the half trying to stop the run, but to no avail. Piedmont finished the half on a 10-2 run.
The Wildcats unleashed a three-fourths zone press and force Guthrie into 15 first half turnovers, including 11 in the first quarter. The result was a 19-2 advantage after the opening quarter. The lead increased to 29-points at the half 35-6.
Things did not improve in the third quarter for the Jays as Piedmont started off with another run. This time it would be an 18-0 run for the athletic ‘Cats to go up 53-10. Nichols hit a field goal with :27 left in the quarter to end the run. Landon Solorio collected his first bucket with just before the buzzer.
Guthrie continued in the fourth quarter with their own run when Reed Roberts scored his first two points. The Jays finished the game by out scoring Piedmont 14-4, but the game was all but over.
Roberts led his team with nine points followed by Nichols’ six points. Dakota Leach added four, Jeremy Brown three, and Solorio two.
Lady Jays fall to 0-3
Guthrie’s Cassidy Jones quickly gave the Lady Jays a 4-0 lead early in the first quarter, but Piedmont scored the next 26-points in the first half. The second half was not any better by being out scored 18-4.
Jones averaged 10.5 points entering the game, but was held to just four points. Asia Johnson and Rachel Freie each had two points.
The Lady Jays dropped their first game of the year to Deer Creek (37-23) and second game to Western Heights (27-25).
Both Guthrie ball clubs will resume their schedule following the Thanksgiving Break next Monday (November 29th) when they travel to McGuinness.
