Guthrie infielder Jacob Chappell has been thrown into action from the very beginning this season for the BlueJay baseball squad and the freshmen was thrown into a tight situation Monday evening.

Jacob Chappell collected his first varsity win along with adding a 2-RBI triple.

The Jays trailed Harrah 5-1 in the second inning when Chappell was called upon to relieve starting pitcher, Hunter Gates, and came in closed the door as the BlueJay offense rallied for 13 runs in the last four innings to run rule the Panthers in six innings with a 14-6 win at Squires Field.

Chappell collected his first varsity win on the mound by throwing four and two-thirds of an inning. He had four punch outs and allowed just one base-on-ball. In addition to his pitching duties, Chappell collected a 2-RBI triple.

The BlueJays jumped out to a 1-0 lead before the Panthers put a five-spot in the second inning to lead 5-1. The game was tied at 5-all when the Jays put a four spot in the third inning. The Jays had the lead for good when they added two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, and three in the sixth to walk off with the win.

Guthrie, who is currently ranked sixth in the coaches poll,  improves to 16-7 overall and 8-3 in conference play. The rankings are released each Tuesday morning.

Leading the offensive charge for the Jays was junior Luke Davis and freshmen Reed Roberts. Both finished by going 3-for-4 while Davis added an RBI and Roberts with two.

Guthrie will showdown with Shawnee, on Tuesday, in a top 10 match up that may have playoff positioning up for grabs. First pitch is set for 5:00 in Shawnee.

The Wolves will enter the game ranked No. 7 with a 13-7 record and winners six of their last seven. Just last week they won their own tournament with wins over Community Christian, Del City, Putnam City North, and Muskogee.
