The Guthrie Bluejays are off to their best start since 2014 with a 6-0 unblemished record. A big part of the success has come from the Bluejays defense setting up the Jays offense. In the first six games of the season, Guthrie has turned their opponents over 23 times.
That’s right, 23 turnovers.
Guthrie has created at least one turnover in each game and at least four turnovers in four games.
In week one, Enid finished with six turnovers and in week three Ponca City finished with five turnovers.
The defense has come away with 22 of those turnovers, while special teams collected one back in week one.
Of the 23 turnovers, 10 have come via interceptions and 13 by fumble recoveries.
Perhaps, the most impressive part is that the Guthrie defense has cashed in on nine of those scores by themselves with five pick sixes and four scoops and scores.
Meanwhile, the offense has done their part in taking advantage of what has been given to them by scoring nine out of 14 times (64 percent of the time).
In total, the Jays have scored 115 points off turnovers, which averages just over 19 points per game alone.
It’s a trend that the Jays would like to continue to see down the final stretch of the regular season with Carl Albert and McGuinness making trips to Jelsma Stadium in October.
