Guthrie Golf takes third in heavy Class 6A field

The Guthrie High School golf team recently traveled to Meadowlake Golf Course in Enid to take part in the 6A West Regional Preview Tournament.

The event was held to give the 6A Schools from the West Side of the State, such as Edmond Memorial, Edmond North, Edmond Santa Fe, Yukon, Mustang, Norman and Norman North the opportunity to get an up close look at the course where they will compete for a chance to make the 6A state tournament later this month.

The Bluejays were a late entrant into the field as the Jays sought to replace an earlier weather cancellation. The move proved to be a good one, as the young 5A Jays ended up taking the third place trophy finishing only behind Edmond Memorial and Norman North and finishing ahead of more than a dozen 6A squads. The Jays started a little slow with a 317 on the first 18 holes, but the solid play of sophomore Luke Roach with a 76 held the round together and left the Jays in fourth heading into the afternoon.

In the next round, the Jays picked up a 14 shot improvement from sophomores Luke Morgan and Bo Robbins, also getting a four-shot swing from freshman Brady Hirzel allowing the Jays to put four scores in the 70’s on the afternoon card.

Adding to the Jays score was junior Luke Dale improved 11 shots from round one to round two.
