Guthrie police officer terminated; arrested after running over his own child

A Guthrie police officer was terminated on Wednesday from the police department and on the same day was arrested for running over his own child with his vehicle while under the influence. This marks the second time for the former officer to be arrested in six months.

Bryan Lee Crumb, 35, faces one charge of causing an accident resulting in great bodily injury while driving under the influence of alcohol. The date of the offense occurred on April 4.

The accident occurred near Crumb’s residence. After striking the child with his vehicle, Crumb attempted to drive the child to Mercy Logan County Hospital, but in the process was in another accident, but no damage was reported in the second incident. Crumb’s car was reported to be disabled after running over a curb.

Guthrie police and fire arrived to the scene of the second accident. From there, the child was transported by ambulance while Crumb was taken by a police officer.

The report shows that police officers could smell alcohol on Crumb’s person.

Once at the hospital, the child was mediflighted to OU Medical Center with bodily injuries. The child has since recovered from those injuries. While at the hospital, a blood test was taken from Crumb.

The result of that test came back on May 21 and showed Crumb’s level at .119, which is over the legal limit (.08).

According to an 8-year-old witness, the child was opening the back door of the car and her dad drove off and he didn’t know she was there and he ran over her back.

Crumb told officers his child wanted to go and get her bike and ride with a friend. He agreed and said he would follow her. Then he says the child grabbed the car door as he was pulling up the street and it dragged her under the car.

A $7,500 warrant was issued for his arrest on Wednesday. He was taken into custody shortly after by investigators with Guthrie Police Department.

Crumb was formally arraigned on Thursday inside the Logan County Courthouse. He’s expected to be back in court on July 28 at 9 a.m.

If found guilty, he could face no less than a year of jail time and no more than 10 years, along with up to a $5,000 fine.

In January, Crumb was arrested after he allegedly arrived for his shift at the police department intoxicated and smelling of alcohol. Related story: Police officer arrested for public intoxication while in uniform

According to the affidavit, the investigator stated when he arrived to the station Crumb was in the passenger seat of his vehicle and in full police uniform. The detective removed Crumb’s gun from his holster and secured it by removing a live round from the chamber as well as a magazine.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge on Feb. 1 and is ongoing in the court system.

Crumb had been on administrative leave with pay until three weeks ago. Following grievance procedures, Crumb was terminated on Wednesday for the incident in January.

In Feb. 2015, through an Open Records request, Guthrie News Page obtained a document stating Crumb was suspended without pay for two weeks, a demotion, unannounced testing for one year to be evaluated for drug and alcohol abuse. At that time, former Guthrie City Manager Sereniah Breland did not release the details on why the officer was suspended.
