Guthrie Public Schools celebrates Future Farmers of America program

Guthrie Public Schools took some time in February to celebrate the impact and success of its Future Farmers of America (FFA) program.

The Guthrie FFA Program dates back to 1937 and has been a pillar of success for students interested in agriculture and leadership. With three teachers serving as advisors since the 1960s, it remains one of the longest-running multi-teacher FFA programs in Oklahoma. Over the years, the program has produced skilled and accomplished students who not only excel in agriculture but also develop essential life and career skills.

Through hands-on learning, students gain experience in areas such as public speaking, financial responsibility, record keeping, and problem-solving. While the program highlights the importance of agriculture in everyday life, its scope extends beyond farming, preparing students for careers in diverse fields.

FFA members engage in leadership events designed to build confidence, communication skills, and teamwork. These experiences prepare them for real-world scenarios, from job interviews to decision-making in complex situations. The program encourages students to think critically and apply their knowledge in practical ways.

Guthrie FFA students also showcase their skills in Career Development Events, participating in competitions such as:

  • Livestock judging
  • Dairy judging
  • Veterinary science
  • Entomology
  • Floriculture
  • Horse judging
  • Electricity
  • Agricultural mechanics
  • Food science
  • Milk quality

Notably, Guthrie High School FFA is home to the 2023 National Championship Livestock Judging Team, as well as state-winning Dairy Judging teams and FFA proficiency award winners. These accomplishments reflect the dedication and hard work of the students and their advisors.

Clay Drake, one of Guthrie’s FFA Advisors, emphasized the long-term impact of the program, stating, “Seeing students after they graduate and finding out how they are succeeding in life—whether through education, careers, or building families—is one of the most rewarding aspects of being an advisor. I love to see my students continue to succeed and grow, contributing not just to their own futures but to the future of our country.”

To continue the celebration of FFA Week, Guthrie FFA members will serve lunch to GHS teachers and participate in various agriculture-related activities with their chapter and fellow high school students. This rescheduled event highlights the program’s ongoing commitment to student growth and leadership within the community.
