Updated Monday, December 9th — Newcastle to appeal OSSAA ruling on Guthrie state semifinal football game
Updated at 5:30 p.m. — The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association released this statement to Guthrie News Page.
“The Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) provides clear guidelines regarding the role of coaches and their eligibility. The rules and policies of the OSSAA do not prohibit the engagement of coaches who are not directly or indirectly employed by or related to a particular school, provided all other rules and eligibility requirements are met.
This matter falls under the school’s internal personnel policies and is being handled accordingly.”
A social media post began circulating with allegations toward the Guthrie football program following a 35-30 victory over Newcastle.
The post showed a picture of a former Guthrie assistant coach, a current Deer Creek assistant coach, wearing a Guthrie jacket and what appeared to be play sheets on the sideline of the state semifinal game Friday night at Putnam City High School.
According to school officials, they were made aware of the concern late Saturday night.
“A thorough investigation of the allegation has been conducted by the school district,” Dr. Mike Simpson said in a release.
Simpson continued, “Members of the district administration and coaching staff have been in contact with the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) as we reported the concern. It was concluded the presence of this former staff member on the Guthrie sideline did not violate any existing OSSAA rules or policies. The OSSAA staff further concluded this is a personnel issue of Guthrie Public Schools.”
The school district said they would have no further comment and is being handled as a “personnel” issue.
Guthrie will play Carl Albert on Saturday night for the Class 5A state championship at the University of Central Oklahoma’s Chad Richison Stadium at 7 p.m.
