It is always interesting this time of year with when the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activity Association releases the ADM (average daily membership) numbers that classify high schools into classes.
This week the preliminary numbers were released for 2012 and 2013 and again changes are coming particularly in Class 5A as they usually do.
Classifications based on the numbers released are not yet official. The OSSAA releases the numbers for its member institutions to check against their own data, allowing time for the OSSAA to correct any discrepancies before the Aug. 10 board meeting to approve the final numbers.
If the numbers stay the same as they are expected to do, Booker T. Washington and Tulsa Edison will be heading to the state’s largest class in 6A while Claremore and Del City fall to 5A. Claremore has made the same move over the last several years, but a first in a long time for the Eagles of Del City High, if ever.
Sneaking into Class 5A is the Guymon High School Tigers. Yes, that Guymon that is 267 miles from Guthrie and yes Woodward is the half way point. Want to guess who the Jays, among others, will be grouped with in the same district? Yep, Guymon. While that has not been announced, go ahead and cash it in.
All sports, excluding football, will play in their new class assignment this season.
Tulsa becomes the largest class in 5A with 1250 students followed by Del City with 1249. Southeast becomes the smallest in the class at 700 students with Guymon just ahead of them with 706.
A surprising note is Chickasha is now the third smallest school in 5A and is just 11 students away from dipping into 4A.
Some of the biggest changes in attendance was Tulsa Hale jumping up 324 students in daily attendance and Deer Creek up 42 students on average. Others increasing their attendance was Guymon (26), Duncan (26), Shawnee (24), McGuinness (24), El Reno (24), Booker T (21), Coweta (21), and Durant (18).
Those schools going the other way include Claremore dropping 54 students on average, Chickasha (-47), and Ardmore (-32). Guthrie dropped by 12 students while Carl Albert did the same by 15. However, Guthrie remains as the 48th largest school in the state and in the middle of 5A. The same spot they have held for some time now.
Some noticable impacts in football and basketball will obviously be Booker T moving up to 6A. The Hornets have won the last two basketball titles and the last football state championship, while Claremore will boost 5A wrestling and baseball.
As usual it is always interesting this time of year as we await for the games to begin.
