The Guthrie Lady Jays softball team kicked off their season with a split at the Pryor Festival, securing an 8-4 victory over Coweta in their opening game before falling 4-0 to Pryor.

The Lady Jays, who reached last year’s state championship game, showed both their offensive power and areas for improvement in their first outing of the season.

Guthrie wasted no time in the opener against Coweta, with senior Haley Gallo, a University of Central Oklahoma commit, launching a two-run homer to left field in the top of the first inning. Coweta’s error further allowed Guthrie to add two more runs, giving the Lady Jays an early 4-0 lead.

Although Coweta quickly responded with two runs of their own, Guthrie extended their lead in the second inning with a three-run blast to center field by Brylan Shephard.

In the circle, senior Kinley Duehning earned the win, allowing four runs on eight hits over five innings while striking out four and walking four.

Sophomore Ryn McCormick led the offense with a perfect three-for-three at the plate, while fellow sophomore Savannah Ingle contributed two hits, including a double.

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Lady Jays face off against Pryor. Pryor managed to score three runs in the second inning, which proved to be enough as Guthrie struggled offensively, managing only five hits. Despite loading the bases in the third inning, the Lady Jays were unable to capitalize.

McCormick, the leadoff hitter, collected two hits.

Freshman Holland McLemore took the loss for Guthrie, pitching four and two-thirds innings while giving up four runs on eight hits, striking out one and walking two.

The Lady Jays will look to bounce back as they continue in the Pryor Festival with games against Tahlequah and Claremore on Tuesday morning.
