Guthrie Track: Back-2-Back State Champs

Bookmark and Share

They say you will always remember the first one, but for the Guthrie BlueJay track team the second will not be a distant memory either.

Guthrie came away with the Class 5A State track championship, Monday, at Tulsa East Central High School to capture back-to-back state championships.

Earlier in the day, the same Jays were awarded the Academic State Championship.

The Jays, who were the favorite coming into this season to win another title, compiled a team score of 111 and was 33 points better than Ardmore’s 78 team points. A year ago, the Jays won by 38 points for their first ever track state championship.

Senior Chaunsey Dumas and junior Emmanuel Robinson came away as individual winners. Dumas took the top spot in the 200 meter dash in 21.77 and fellow senior Dustin Bohanan came away in second place with a 22.09 sprint.

Robinson took the spot in the 100 meter dash (10.84) and the 110 hurdles (14.45). Dumas (10.86) was just behind Robinson in the 100 meter in a photo finish as Robinson came away by two tenths of a second. Robinson also finished third in the 300 intermediate hurdles and is now a 2-time winner in the 110 hurdles and will be the favorite again next season.

Chaunsey Dumas, Alphonzo Wilcots, Emmanuel Robinson, and Dustin Bohanan won the 4 x 100 relay state championship.

Perhaps the most expected outcome of the state meet was the Jays 4 x 100 relay team. The real question was what will the second team time be. Guthrie’s Dumas, Robinson, Alphonso Wilcots, and Dustin Bohanan ran a 41.92 for the top spot. East Central’s team finished second in a time of 42.78. Last year, Guthrie won the relay race in a time of 42.78.

The four Guthrie members set a school record earlier this season, in Edmond, with a time of 41.77 in the relay.

The 4 x 800 relay team of Jason Ogan, Zack Cates, Colin Betchan, and Jared Ogan finished third behind Tahlequah and Coweta.

In the 1600 meter run, Ogan ran a 4:37.19 and was five seconds behind the winner Taler Buck of Deer Creek. Ogan then finished third overall in the 3200 run (10:14.21) while younger brother Jonathan Ogan came across next 10:21.95. Hunter Sallee finished sixth with a time of 10:26.64.

Earlier in the school year, the Ogan brothers, Sallee, Betchan, and Cates were members who helped the Jays Cross Country team win the 5A State championship.

Jays sophomore Zac Brown had two fourth place finishes in the shot put and discus.  Brown there the shot put 49-5 and the discus 138-1.

Guthrie is coached by Gary Boxley, Clay Tarter, and Dietrich Hayes.
