Registered voters within the city limits of Guthrie will head to the polls in January to decide on a franchise agreement between the City of Guthrie and Oklahoma Natural Gas (ONG).
The agreement would allow the company the right to operate its utility along public rights-of-ways for the next 25 years.
ONG representatives presented the discussion at the city council’s meeting held Tuesday evening.
If approved by the voters, ONG would be allowed the authority to use the public ways for the distribution of natural gas and provide the City a 2% franchise fee on the natural gas sold in Guthrie.
Martie Oyler with ONG said the current agreement with the City comes from a 1981 gross receipts ordinance which gives the City a 2% fee from what ONG collects on bills. She added that in the last 12 months, the fee has created $88,756 for the City.
The full council voted unanimously (7-0) to allow voters to decide.
The vote will be held on January 9, 2024, to qualified voters. The cost of the election will be paid by ONG.
ONG has served Guthrie since 1907 and was one of the first cities to have the service in the state along with Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Shawnee.
Currently, there are 7,000 customers in Guthrie and 10,600 in Logan County.
