When football fans come to Jelsma Stadium they notice a clean facility. A big part in keeping the stadium spruced up comes from those serving time in jail.
The following day after every home football game (high school and junior high), Logan County Sheriff Damon Devereaux takes jail trustees from the jail and across to the stadium to pick up left over debris from football fans.
A jail trustee is an inmate who has been a good inmate and given the privilege of working in a job on the grounds of the jail or outside the jail. The inmates are supervised by a certified jailer.
Devereaux says the program helps the school district, but also the inmates
“We’re looking to try and use that work force as much as we can because it benefit us and it benefits them (inmates),” Devereaux said.
Inmates are given an additional day (two-for-one) of time served for working at the jail.
