The Guthrie High School tennis duo of Caden Hopfer and Aaron Hartley faced a tough challenge in their final two matches of the 5A state tennis tournament. The teammates battled on the final day.
After winning their first two state matches against Altus and Carl Albert, Hopfer and Hartley had the tall task of taking on Heritage Hall, a Oklahoma City private school, in the semifinals. Related article: Hartley and Hopfer advance to state tennis semifinals
Heritage Hall’s Tony Lai and Miller Zeiders finished with a 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the state championship match, which they defeated Bishop Kelley, a Tulsa private school, for the No. 1 state title.
Guthrie rebounded in the third place match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Cascia Hall, another Tulsa private school.
A private school has won 11 stratight team titles in the second largest class division. Heritage Hall has now won four straight.
