The Guthrie football program will conclude the regular season Friday night with a trip to C.B. Speegle Stadium and take on a 1-8 Southeast Spartan ball club. It will be the third straight week the Jays have played in a Senior Night game.
The Guthrie offense will look to keep their momentum going down the stretch of the season.
The Jays are all but certain to win their seventh game in a row and finish the regular season with a 9-1 record, but their focus is continue to get better heading into the playoffs.
Guthrie has the district championship all wrapped up and know they will be hosting most likely Durant in the first round of the playoffs inside Jelsma Stadium next Friday night.
Meanwhile, Southeast (0-6 in district) is in danger of losing their seventh game in a row after starting the season 3-0. The Spartans were just a hand full of undefeated teams heading into the district portion of the season.
Against Ada, Deer Creek, and Carl Albert (all playoff teams), the Spartans have been outscored 182-13.
This will be the third meeting since 2001 between the Jays and Spartans. Guthrie won both games in 2007 (69-0) and 2006 (49-0).
Since beginning district play, Southeast has been outscored on an average of 50-12 and will have a daunting task of trying to move the ball against the Guthrie defense.
Guthrie’s allows a state best 131 total yards of offense and another state best in just allowing 40-yards rushing a game. In district play alone, the defense has allowed a total of 153 (25.5 average) rushing yards. Total.
The Guthrie offense continues to click. Quarterback Bryan Dutton continues to receive max protection up front from his lineman (Blake Belcher, Hayden Seifert, Cooper Davis, Malachi Galbraith, Bryce Sullivan) to throw the ball at a 66% completion rate.
Dutton needs five more touchdown tosses to tie his 26 from a season ago. A difference for Dutton in his second season has been his interceptions. In 13 games last year, he had 10 picks, but has managed just four this season thru nine games.
The offense is back over 400 yards of offense per game (403) with 209 rushing and 193 passing. In the nine games, Guthrie averages 35 points a game.
Kentrell Brothers continues to be among the best in receptions, yards, and touchdowns, but fellow senior Devonte McCully is coming into his own. The 6’6 target has brought in 26 receptions for 478 yards with eight touchdown scores.
