The Guthrie Junior High seventh and eighth grade football teams continue to stay unbeaten in the 2014 season with both teams collecting home wins Thursday evening against Ponca City.

The seventh grade team scored on their opening possession and never looked back by shutting-out the Wildcats 12-0. In the second game inside Jelsma Stadium, the eighth grade team cruised to a 28-8 victory.
With the wins, the seventh grade team improves to 3-0 and the eighth grade team improves to 4-0.
Guthrie quarterbacks took the scoring highlights with big plays.
Eight grade quarterback Jackson Waddell was responsible for 14 of the team’s 28 points with two touchdown runs and a two-point conversion.
After a scoreless first quarter, Caleb Nelson picked off a Ponca City pass and ran it into the end zone for a 75-yard return, but was called back due to a penalty near the Guthrie sideline.

However, a few plays later, Waddell broke the line of scrimmage and then out-ran the Wildcats secondary for a 51-yard score. The two-point conversion was successful when Waddell hit Marcellus Owens on the pass.
Those would be the only points in the first half, but the offense got going again in the third quarter.
Waddell hit pay dirt on the Jays first possession with a 64-yard run to push the lead up to 14-0.
Afterwards, the Jays surprised Ponca City with an onside kick and recovered the loose ball at the Wildcats 40 yard line. Several plays later, running back Blake Curtin scored on an 8-yard run and capped off with a Waddell 2-poinnt conversion,
CJ Ward finished off the Jays scoring with an early fourth quarter score from 35-yards out to give Guthrie a 28-0 lead.
Seventh grade defense scores a shut-out
Cale Coffman got the seventh grade team on the board with a 45-yard scamper to go up 6-0. The next and final score came on the legs of Coffman again. This time in the third quarter.
On a read-zone play, Coffman rolled out to his right and hit pay dirt from 16-yards out to complete the game’s scoring.
The Guthrie defense was relentless with big plays throughout the evening and was never truly threaten on the score board.
