Guthrie dominates their way to 4-0 record with win over McGuinness

It’s not certain if the Guthrie offense or the Guthrie defense was more dominating, but the BlueJays were clicking on all cylinders for their first win in four tries at Bishop McGuinness. Idae Alexander, once again, proved to be the spark plug on offense.

Alexander rushed for a career second best 195 yards, on 33 carries, and scored twice as the Jays stayed unbeaten with a 35-0 win inside McGuinness’ Pribil Stadium. The senior collected an additional 36 yards receiving.

As good as the Jays running game was, the passing game was equally impressive behind the right arm of Zane Maltz. The junior completed 9-of-13 passes for 138 yards. His primary target was L’liott Curry, who finished with seven receptions for 108 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

The main ingredient proved to be the Jays offensive line. The group (Justin Dutton, Hagen Wano, Andrew Woods, Conan Maltz and Michael Pruitt) created path ways for the running game and allowed time for Maltz to locate receivers.

Guthrie (4-0, 1-0) controlled the time of possession by more than double (33 of the game’s 48 minutes) with their balance attack. Overall, the Jays offense finished with 235 yards on the ground and 162 through the air.

Perhaps more impressive than the offense was Guthrie’s defense.

The Jays held the Irish to negative 36 yards rushing, 74 yards of total offense and only four first downs. McGuinness (2-2, 0-1) managed just five yards of offense in the first half.

The negative rushing game was aided by seven Guthrie sacks, including two from Jeremy Wallis.

McGuinness never could penetrate the red-zone despite completing 11-of-17 passes.

With a 14-0 halftime lead, Guthrie essentially put the game away on Curry’s grab, but the night was highlighted on a wide receiver pass from Tanner Meredith to Davis put the Bluejays up 28-0 in the fourth quarter.

The scoring was capped off from senior Kelyn Hinds, who returned a punt for 37 yards in the final five minutes of the game.
