The Guthrie Junior High football teams returned to Jelsma Stadium to defend their 2-0 starts to the season.
The 8th grade Jays did just that with a convincing 36-0 win after jumping out to a 24-0 halftime lead. The 7th grade was not as fortunate as the offense struggled to move the ball in a 20-6 setback on a cool, damp evening.
The Guthrie 8th grade team proved to be balance by scoring three scores on the ground and three more through the air. With six total scores, the Jays were unsuccessful on all six two-point attempts.
The first score came less than three minutes when quarterback Zane Maltz hooked up with Chase Bufford on a 36-yard reception for the opening score.
The game remained 6-0 until early in the second quarter when running back Jaron Pryor scored on a 5-yard run, but it was Pryor who set the score up when he took the option from Maltz from the 23 yard line to the 5.
Leading 12-0, Guthrie went through the air again and again it was Maltz to Bufford. This time the connection was good for 29-yards and an 18-0 lead.
Western Heights appeared they were going to be able to run the first half clock out, but a fumble gave the Jays the ball back and lead to the next score.
Guthrie took over from their own 54-yard line when Maltz found wide-out Austin Flury on a slant pass and from their Flury turn on the jets and scored the fourth touchdown of the half.
The BlueJays added two more scores in the half with two long distance runs from Terran Daniel and Thaddeus Quilimaco.
Daniel scored first in the third quarter when he took the hand off and went to the house from 35 yards out. Quilimaco finished the scoring when he covered up a bad snap and darted would be tacklers and scored on a 51-yard run.
7th grade falls for the first time
The 7th grade game could not have started any better for the Jays when they jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but from that point the offense struggled to move the ball with success.
Guthrie quarterback, Cal Davis, who was forced into the position, took off on a 36 yard run as he took it from the 46 yard line all the way down to the 10 and just a few plays later Davis spotted Bryce Anderson for a 4-yard touchdown score. Davis was unable to score on the 2-point conversion and the score remained 6-0.
Western Heights from that point on scored 20 unanswered points, including 14 in the first half to take a 14-6 lead into halftime. The Jets did it with a 61 yard run and a 70 yard punt return.
The only score in the second half came with a Jets fake punt that hit pay dirt from 56 yards out.
Guthrie threaten to score in the fourth quarter with enough time to make a run at the Jets. Davis hit Breyden Codding on a nice pass connection from the 33-yard line all the way down to the 9. The BlueJays moved the ball down inside the one, but failed to punch it in on fourth down to somewhat sum up the night on offense.
Up next for both Guthrie squads will be two games on the road starting with a trip to El Reno on September 22nd and September 29th at Deer Creek.
