Kara Sawyer, a 17 year resident of Guthrie, is seeking the office of State House of Representative District 31. She is currently teaching special education with students of severe and profound disabilities for Guthrie Public Schools.
Sawyer started her teaching career at Guthrie upon graduating from Southwestern Oklahoma State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education holding a dual certification for both Mild/Moderate and Severe/Profound disabilities. During her tenure as an educator, Sawyer was named District Teacher of the Year and was recognized as the NBA’s OKC Thunder Teacher of the Game in 2017. She is a Nationally Certified Trainer for Youth Mental Health First Aid and currently is serving as Chairman of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Advisory Council for the City of Guthrie.
After moving to Guthrie, Sawyer quickly became engaged and invested in Logan County community activities and social service agencies by volunteering. Her involvements were among Logan County United Way, Logan Community Services, and the American Red Cross, to name a few. Kara has worked and served on several community boards allowing her to identify and service the increasing needs for the citizens of Logan County.
Sawyer, running as a Democrat, was named the County Coordinator for Sooner SUCCESS – Logan County and worked diligently with other community leaders to provide a network of support and assistance for families with special needs. Sawyer continues to be an advocate and resource provider for all families with children of special needs.
Sawyer was named Executive Director for Logan County Systems of Care with a mission to provide wrap-around services for youth and families with Mental Health and Substance Abuse issues. This work provided Kara to become a voice and advocate for individuals with Mental Health/Substance Abuse issues.
In 2009, Sawyer was named Executive Director of the American Red Cross – Logan County. Sawyer implemented new fund-raising efforts, expanded awareness for services provided and improved services offered to families in times of disaster. Through this work, Sawyer developed important, much-needed support and collaboration with first responders, local law enforcement and local firefighters throughout Logan County.
With the proven experience, combined with years of dedication and determination, to meet the needs of all citizens of Logan County, Sawyer says she is ready to take on the challenge for change that needs to happen in Oklahoma.
“The time is now, for change. Change will happen when our issues are met with educated, informed and transparent actions. As your State Representative, I am ready and prepared to rise up, one united voice, to face the challenges before us,” Sawyer said.
