Lady Jays complete perfect district run, claim title with 12-2 win over Carl Albert

The Guthrie Lady Jays accomplished something they haven’t done in more than 15 years Monday, completing a perfect run through district play and capturing the district championship with a 12-2 victory over Carl Albert.

Guthrie finished district play with a perfect 10-0 record, securing the district title and earning the opportunity to host a regional tournament when the Class 5A playoffs begin.

Anna Stevens helped put the finishing touches on the district-clinching victory with a huge day at the plate, driving in five runs on three hits, including a three-run home run in the sixth inning.

Carl Albert grabbed the early advantage with single runs in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Jays answered in the bottom of the third.

Lola Brown singled home a run before Teagan Duehning delivered a two-run double. Stevens followed with an RBI single as Guthrie surged in front, 4-2.

Guthrie continued to build its lead before putting the game away in the bottom of the sixth.

The Lady Jays scored five runs on three hits in the inning. Duehning doubled home two runs before Stevens delivered the afternoon’s biggest swing, launching a three-run home run to center field to help finish the 12-2 victory.

Stevens and Duehning each finished with three hits for Guthrie, while Brown added two hits in three at-bats. The Lady Jays collected 10 hits as a team.

Guthrie also received a strong performance in the circle. After the Lady Jays’ starter, Holland McLemore, allowed two runs on five hits over the first two innings, Guthrie’s relief pitcher, Emry Hebensperger, worked four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven and walking one to earn the victory.

The Lady Jays were also flawless defensively, finishing the game without an error.

The victory capped an impressive district schedule for Guthrie, which went 10-0 to claim the championship and complete its first undefeated district run in more than 15 years.

More importantly, the district title means postseason softball will be coming back to Guthrie.

The Lady Jays will host a regional tournament when the Class 5A playoffs get underway, with the regional champion advancing to the state tournament in Shawnee.
