It was a tale of two halves in the Consolation Finals of the Mid-Del Holiday Invitational Tournament at Del City High School. Unfortunately, it was Guthrie with the quick start and Rogers Heritage with the second half spurt.

BasketballIn a matter of minutes, Guthrie saw their 7-point halftime lead (18-11) turn into a two-point deficit.

Heritage, based out of Rogers, Ark., in the first 3:51 of the third quarter went on an 9-0 run highlighted by Emily Jobst. After being held scoreless in the first half, she poured in 14 points in the third and finished with 17.

Despite the onslaught of quick points, Guthrie tied the game at 29-all with a Kamber Smedley’s field goal. However, Heritage would go on an 8-0 run in the next 1:51 to open the game. The War Eagles would build a lead up to as high as 12 points with two minutes left in the game.

Micayla Haynes led the way in points with 13, but was held to three free throws in the second half. She finished the three-day tourney with a total of 56 points for an average of 18.6.

Sophomore Micayla Haynes scored 19 of her game high 25 points in the first half to give Guthrie a chance. However, Midwest City (3-0) hit just enough free throws to pull out the 57-50 win.

Guthrie (1-2) kept themselves in the game with Haynes ability to get to the bucket, good man-to-man defense and connecting on 20-of-29 free throws.

The Lady Jays built up a five point advantage, 22-17, in the second quarter only to see Midwest City outscored Guthrie 10-2 in the 2:09 to take a 27-24 lead at halftime.

With 2:50 to play in the game, Guthrie scored to tie the game at 47-all, but could not find the offense in the remainder of the game.

Next up for Guthrie will be a 2 p.m. meeting with Bixby, who was upset by Northwest Classen 47-43, on Friday afternoon at Midwest City High School.
