The Logan County Sheriff’s Office has lost a deputy following a shooting near Mulhall. Deputy David Wade was shot multiple times in the upper body, including the face. He later died at a Oklahoma City hospital.
Sheriff Damon Devereaux says Wade was serving an eviction notice at a home on Mulhall Road about a mile and a half from I-35 at 8:42 a.m. on Tuesday. Wade encountered three people at the home and began asking for identification. Shortly later, Wade notified dispatched that he had been shot in the face.
Guthrie EMS worked on Wade, 40, in the front yard before moving inside the ambulance where they continued to give medical care. Wade was later airlifted to OU Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:51 a.m.
After shooting the deputy, Nathan LaForce, 45, stole Wade’s patrol truck to Coyle and abandoned it at a nearby gas station off of Highway 33. From there, LaForce stole a gray Mazda and abandoned that vehicle near County Road 76 and attempted to hide in an out building.
Langston University, Mulhall School District and Coyle school districts were all on lockdown while the search was underway.
The Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office found him and took into custody with no other incident.
LeForce has a criminal history including multiple misdemeanors. In 2001 Leforce pleaded guilty to pointing a firearm, and eluding police in 2012 he pleaded guilty to unauthorized use of a vehicle and possession of a stolen vehicle. In 2015 he was charged with kidnapping, child endangerment, and domestic abuse.
Wade leaves behind a wife and three children.
“I am very sad for their loss. I want everyone to pray for the family and my officers involved,” Devereaux said.
“Deputy Wade lived like a warrior and died like one. He gave his life serving this community,” a choking Devereaux said outside the hospital in Oklahoma City.
The funeral is set for Monday, April 24 at the Lazy E Arena and under the guidance of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home.
