OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Water Resources Board has completed the initial phase of a project to map water and wastewater infrastructure in several Oklahoma communities and rural water districts, including Logan County Rural Water District No. 3, and to provide the systems with a secure web-based map viewer to view their data.
The OWRB’s Financial Assistance Division, which lead the effort, is partnering with the University of Oklahoma’s Center for Spatial Analysis to develop the interactive web viewer application. The OWRB’s Water Quality and Administrative Services Divisions provided mapping support, capturing the locations of water and wastewater lines, valves, hydrants, and other essential infrastructure.
The goal of the project is to support water, wastewater, storm water and water reuse planning and maintenance at the local level. In addition to login-based access to the map viewer, each participating entity will be provided with digital printable maps and the project dataset in electronic format.
“Many Oklahoma communities and rural water systems are working off of maps that are either outdated or not fully representative of all the infrastructure within the system,” said Joe Freeman, OWRB’s Chief of Financial Assistance Division. “This project is the initial step in locating the water infrastructure so that subsequent work can be done in detecting and correcting problem areas or leaks.”
In addition to Logan County Rural Water District No. 3, the other participating communities and water districts include Antlers, Fletcher, Davis, Eufaula, and Kay County Rural Water District No. 4.
An additional five Oklahoma communities, Shattuck, Cherokee, Henryetta, Luther, and Comanche, have also chosen to include their data in the map viewer. These communities had previously completed mapping projects for their water and wastewater infrastructure through Oklahoma Department of Commerce Capital Improvement Planning grants.
Pipeline data collected as part of the project will also be added to the OWRB’s existing publicly available map viewer: Public Water Supply Systems in Oklahoma.
