Steve Gentling, President, Logan County United Way announced recently the acceptance of the 2012 United Way Campaign Chair by LaVerne Dowding, President of BancFirst in Guthrie.

“We are so pleased that LaVerne has accepted the Chairmanship of our campaign.  He continues the tradition of community leaders who have stepped up to lead this county-wide campaign.  LaVerne’s insights, energy and long-standing support of the United Way will be a huge benefit to this year’s campaign.”

LaVerne has been a Guthrite since 1996 when he moved from Hugo, Oklahoma to become the President of BancFirst.  He is active in the community with membership in the Guthrie Chamber of Commerce, Logan County Economic Development Council, the Guthrie Noon Lions Club, Owens Arts Place Museum and the 1st Southern Baptist Church.

When asked about his philosophy for community support and helping others he said, “Everyone has something to give, at some level and in some capacity each of us, as an individual or as an institution, has something unique to give to help others in need.  Sometime it is financial; sometimes it is a special skill; and sometimes it is simply giving time.  But we all have something to give, some way to provide a helping hand.”

Actually, Laverne was involved as the United Way Campaign Chair shortly after he arrived in Guthrie.

“The campaign has changed a lot since then.  The mission and the focus is still the same, but the ability to provide resources has significantly increased.  BancFirst was a United Way pacesetter organization my first year here and has continued that tradition every year since.  The United Way has become a part of our culture”.

LaVerne lists as his goals for this year’s campaign: make the campaign’s financial goal; grow the base of contributors to United Way; and increase the awareness and understanding of what Logan County United Way does through its 10 partner agencies.

LaVerne and his wife, Susan, have two children, Kiick and April, and 3 grandchildren.
