Logan County with 45 active COVID cases; Crescent pushes back start of school, again

For the second time this month, Crescent Public Schools has pushed back the start of the 2020-21 school year. The superintendent says the number of COVID cases is high in the county.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health released the latest COVID data on Saturday morning. Logan County currently has 45 active, confirmed cases.

The 45 active cases marks the highest point, which has occurred three times (Aug. 10 and Aug. 13).

In total, the county has seen 242 confirmed cases with 196 recoveries and one death for the estimated county population of 48,000.

The numbers continue to rise in Crescent with 15 active cases, while Guthrie has 15 active cases.

Last week, Crescent Supt. Bart Watkins pushed the first day of classes back to Aug. 18, but in a letter on the district’s website the date has been moved to Aug. 24.

“COVID-19 cases are high in Logan County, and that has affected this decision, but starting later will also allow us to receive and prepare freshman technology that was delayed in shipping due to the virus,” Watkins said.

“We feel that this will be more advantageous for our students. Being able to receive and train on their computers the first week will definitely make any possible future virtual learning days smoother.”

Watkins added the days missed will be made up with virtual learning days on August 28th and September 18.

For the state, there were 901 reported new coronavirus cases, bringing the total cumulative number of the state’s positive cases to 47,798 and 39,907 recoveries.

There were 13 additional deaths announced on Saturday to push the total to 657, according to the health department.

The health department shows 35.16% of those who tested positive are between the ages of 18 and 35, 21.93% are 36 to 49 years old, 17.93% are 50 to 64 years old, 13.87% are 65 years old or older, 8.85% are 5 to 17 years old and 2.26% are 4 years old or younger.
