Logan County woman, child safe in Texas following kidnapping

Updated on June 28, 2021 — The Logan County Sheriff’s Office made their first public statement of the kidnapping and hostage situation of a Logan County woman on Monday.

Undersheriff Troy Dykes said they responded to a missing person’s report on June 24.

The suspect in the case has been identified as 29-year-old Joshua Wallin.

Dykes says suspicious details were discovered, including a black bag of rope, tape and zip ties, important items for basic needs of family and child were left behind and did not report to a known scheduled event.

Wallin made several statements of possibly having explosives inside his vehicle during the intense hostage incident additionally possessed a firearm.

Deputies requested a search warrant of Wallin’s residence in Guthrie. Due to the concerns of explosives, the Edmond Police Department and Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s bomb squad was requested to assist LCSO with the execution of the search warrant. 

“We confirmed that no explosive items or ingredients were located all other items seized are currently under investigation,” Dykes said.

It was, once again, confirmed both the woman and child are safe.

A one-year-old boy and his mother was held hostage by a male suspect for nearly three hours in Texas after reportedly being taken at gun point in Logan County.

Guthrie News Page has learned the woman was taken from her home — just outside of Crescent. Afterwards, the man drove to a daycare in Guthrie, picked up the child and traveled to Texas.

On late Thursday afternoon, San Patricio County deputies and Corpus Christi police officers were dispatched to assist in a vehicle pursuit with a gold Jeep with Oklahoma license plates and learned that the driver possibly kidnapped his wife and child and was armed with a gun.

“The driver called our 911 center and told our dispatcher to have our units back up because he was armed with a gun and a bomb,” Sheriff Oscar Rivera posted to Facebook. “He told us he wanted to ‘see the ocean.’ ”  

Officers attempted to disable the vehicle by method of spikes. The spikes were effective and shortly after the vehicle came to a stop. At that point, the suspect entered a restaurant, taking the minor child as a hostage. The female was able to escape the vehicle and run to officers for safety. Witnesses told officers that upon entering the restaurant the male discharged his firearm and demanded that everyone exit.

The SWAT team was called in and they began dialogue with the male. Just after 8:15 p.m., the male ceased communication with negotiators and used his own handgun to shoot himself. SWAT members immediately entered the building and secured the minor child and administered life-saving efforts for the male.

The male was transported to a hospital and remains in critical condition.
