Yes, I am a very positive person, some even say I have rose colored glasses —– but you know I can live with that flaw. I will admit I tend to see the best in every situation, in every person —–and in every town —– especially when it’s the town I live in and love. Now that is certainly not to say that our community of Guthrie America hasn’t got a few warts, but oh my gosh the positives are just stunning. Just for a few comparisons with other communities in our state that are about our size:
—– EVERY town our size would LOVE to have the architecture of our main streets and residential areas.
—– EVERY town our size would LOVE to have the largest Masonic Temple in the country.
—– EVERY town our size would LOVE to have their own hospital and clinic system.
—– EVERY town our size would LOVE to have their own newspaper printing three times each week.
—– EVERY town our size would LOVE to have museums like the Territorial museum, the All Sports Museum, the Apothecary Museum, the Owens Fine Arts Museum.
——EVERY town our size would LOVE to boast the recent passing of a 16.2 million dollar school bond issue and a potential 17 million dollar sales tax increase.
——EVERY town our size would LOVE to have the Pollard Theater
—–EVERY town our size would LOVE to have recently been selected as one of seven Oklahoma Creative Communities (thank you Lucy Swanson and The Arts in Guthrie).
—–EVERY town our size would LOVE to host the ‘89er Celebration, the Bluegrass Festival, the Territorial Christmas, and the Art Walks.
Yes, I know I have left out many of the things that “Every town our size would LOVE to have” that WE have here in Guthrie America. I would LOVE for you to remind me at Sgentling@cox.net and I will update OUR list. And yes I know there are many things we can work on together to make Guthrie America even better —— and there are many many of your friends and neighbors who are working on those things as you read this column. But let’s not lose sight of the many wonderful things about our town — wonderful things that define our community. What a fantastic foundation we have to build on together!! We are a city on the move —- and I invite y’all to get on the train —– or get out of the way —– because THIS train is on the move!!!
And so I ask you: Is your Guthrie cup half full, or is it half empty?? Mine is half full and getting fuller every day!!! Will you join me??
