OSSAA approves football districts for 2022, 2023 seasons; Jays schedule to shuffle

The Guthrie Bluejays will have a slightly different football schedule for the 2022 and 2023 seasons after the Oklahoma Secondary of Schools Activities Association (OSSAA) Board of Directors approved district realignment on Wednesday morning.

District realignment occurs every two years as the OSSAA considers Average Daily Membership (ADM). ADM is the measure of how many students each school has on a daily basis and is used for separating schools into different classifications for activity purposes.

With the approved ADM numbers and realignment, Piedmont is now the largest school in Class 5A with 1183 students (grades 9-12). Guthrie, who normally ranks between 45 and 48 in ADM, dropped to 54th with an ADM of 837 students with COVID-19 playing a factor for not only Guthrie, but many other public schools as well.

Meanwhile, Midwest City and Del City drop from the 6A ranks into 5A and will instantly become forces in not only football, but basketball as well. Also coming into 5A will be Elgin as they move up a class.

On the other side of the coin, Tahlequah and Northwest Classen jump up to 6A, while Western Heights and Woodward move down to Class 4A.

With district realignment, Shawnee moves back to the west side of the state and will play in District 5A-2 as they replace Woodward. Southeast will move over from 5A-1 to 5A-2 with Western Heights dropping to 4A.

The 5A-2 district, which has been the elite district in the class for some time with the state champion coming from the district in eight of the past 10 seasons, will be as follows: Guthrie, Carl Albert, McGuinness, Lawton Eisenhower, Guymon, Shawnee, Southeast and Piedmont.

The Bluejays will now look to fill out their non-district schedule with having to replace their week zero game with Shawnee. The Jays will also need to fill a week one void with the Putnam City West series going away. The week two game with Duncan will remain for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
