The Guthrie Board of Education will meet on Thursday, at 7 p.m., for their regular monthly schedule meeting and will do so with a new member on the board.

Guthrie SchoolsTerry Pennington is expected to take his oath of office and take his school board chair for the first time after winning last month’s school board election. Pennington edged out Jody Walker in a narrow election of six votes (282-276) held on Feb. 12.

With a new elected official, the board will elect a President, First Vice-President, Second Vice-President, Board Clerk and a Deputy Board Clerk.

Following an executive session, the board will consider and is expected to approve the resignation of Junior High teacher Nicholas Lyon. Lyon, who was suspended with pay on Feb. 15, has been under investigation after a parent shared some of the inappropriate details of a book that some eighth grade students were reading.

In other actions, the school board will consider action on awarding of bid for a door security system. The bid is for equipment and services required to implement and maintain external
door security for all school sites, including Faver and the Administration Building.

The board will also consider extending an agreement with Interquest Detection Canines to provide contraband inspection services utilizing non-aggressive contraband detection canines. The school system has used this company since 2011.

The campuses covered under this agreement are the High School, Junior High and Guthrie Upper Elementary School. The company will provide six full day visits per school year and there is no increase in the cost ($425).
