The Guthrie Police Department has launched a new initiative aimed at reducing firearm thefts and promoting responsible gun ownership across Logan County.
The “Secure Logan County” program is funded through a federal public safety grant and provides free gun locks and lock boxes to residents. Officials say the effort comes in response to an increase in firearms being stolen from unsecured vehicles and homes, often ending up in the hands of individuals prohibited from possessing them.
Police Chief Don Sweger said the goal is to remove barriers to safe storage and help residents play a role in preventing crime.
Beginning Monday, April 27, Logan County residents can pick up safety equipment at multiple locations, including the Guthrie Police Department, Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Crescent Police Department, Cashion Police Department, Langston Police Department, and Langston University Police Department.
The program offers heavy-duty trigger locks, with a limit of five per household, and lock boxes designed for secure storage in vehicles or homes, limited to two per household.
Items will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. Residents must present a valid ID showing Logan County residency. Officials emphasized that no firearm registration or serial number documentation is required to receive the equipment, as the program is focused solely on safety and theft prevention.
