Piedmont is too much for Guthrie in district showdown

Freshmen Kinley Duehning warms up between innings against Putnam City North on August 10, 2021.

It did not take long for Piedmont to gain momentum and the lead Tuesday evening at the jam-packed Guthrie High School softball field.

The first pitch of the game was singled out to the outfield. The next batter collected a single and both would score with another single and a Guthrie error. Before the Lady Jays came to the plate, they were down 2-0.

Piedmont added another run in the second to go up 3-0.

Guthrie found the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning as the Eichler sisters got it going. Abbie drove the first pitch to center field and was followed by Ashlee’s single to left. Both were moved up with a sacrifice bunt from Codi Hibbs. Ava Hebensperger collected the run batted in with a deep fly ball to plate the run.

The Wildcats added another run in the fourth with the benefit of two Guthrie errors and two more runs in the fifth.

Guthrie outhit Piedmont, 9-8, but committed two additional errors than their counterparts. They finished the game with five total errors.

The Lady Jays added a run in the fifth and in the sixth.

Saylor Hamilton, who went 2-3 on the day, made her way to second base to begin the fifth with a single and an error. She came across to score on an RBI single from Haley Gallo to make it a 6-2 score.

The Eichler girls, both finished 2-3 at the plate, got after it again in the sixth with back-to-back doubles, including an RBI for Ashlee to pull within three runs.

Guthrie loaded the bases in the inning with one out, but a double play ended the threat. In their final at-bat, the Jays went down in order.

Guthrie falls to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in district play.

Next up will be a road trip to Lawton Eisenhower on Friday to take on the Lady Eagles and Class 6A’s Westmoore.
