The high school baseball season got under way, Tuesday evening, at Squires Field for the Guthrie BlueJays. It was not the result the home team was looking for, but the Jays should be an intriguing team to watch in the 2011 season.
Ponca City erupted for five runs in the opening inning and eventually put the game away in the sixth and seventh innings with four runs each to win 13-4.
The BlueJays, who have just one senior player on the roster, started freshmen Reed Roberts on the mound and showed the coaching staff the potential he can earn one day by pitching three innings.
Roberts allowed all five earned runs in the first innings by allowing the first seven of eight Wildcats to get on base. The Cats took advantage of three hits and three walks to jump out 5-0. Roberts, however, held the ‘Cats to just one hit in his next two innings of work, including recording three strike outs.
The Jays responded with 2-runs of their own in the home half of the first. Luke Davis singled in his first at bat of the season and was followed by Bryan Dutton’s walk. With two outs, junior’s Hayden Seiftert and John Clark connected for RBI singles to bring in Davis and Dutton, respectively.
Davis finished 2-for-3 with a run score and was a half step away from going 3-for-3.
Neither team could bring a run across the next four innings before the Cats scratched off eight runs in the final two innings.
Guthrie put together a 2-run seventh by collecting four hits from Hunter Gates, Scott Pickle, Davis, and Landry Chappell. Dutton collected a RBI sac fly and Chappell picked up his first RBI on his single.
The Jays will be back home Thursday when they host Carl Albert to begin conference play. The first pitch is set for 5:00.
