Republican State Representative Garry Mize has joined a lawsuit filed by President Donald Trump’s attorney, Jay Sekelow, and his organization opposing Planned Parenthood’s efforts to expand abortion in Oklahoma.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Governor Kevin Stitt ordered a delay in most elective surgeries, including elective abortions.
Planned Parenthood filed suit to force Stitt to remove elective abortions from the ban. The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), led by Sekelow, has filed a brief on behalf of Mize and other pro-life legislators supporting Stitt’s initial order.
“I am proud to stand with fellow pro-life legislators in this lawsuit and fight to defend the right to life in Oklahoma,” Mize said. “As we have explained to the Court “the [abortion industry’s] insistence on continuing to perform elective abortions will undoubtedly limit the necessary resources needed to treat COVID-19 patients. [Planned Parenthood and their pro-abortion allies] fail to show that elective abortions are more beneficial to the public interest than adequately treating pandemic patients and protecting healthcare workers.”
Mize added, “businesses across the State are suffering and sacrificing during this emergency. Abortion is, undeniably, a business; and that business should not be singled out for special treatment or status over all other business and over all other Oklahomans.”
Mize’s support for pro-life positions has already drawn praise from leaders in the right to life movement.
Tony Lauinger, State Chairman of Oklahomans for Life (National Right to Life affiliate), said, “Garry has stood strong for the right to life in Oklahoma. He has been especially helpful in moving life-affirming legislation through committee to the floor of the full House of Representatives. We need committed legislators like Garry Mize who are willing to defend the right to life.”
