Classes at Guthrie Public Schools are officially underway for the 2026-27 school year, with students returning to classrooms across the district Thursday morning.

The first day included a planned late start for Guthrie High School students to accommodate the annual senior drive.

District administrators also spent the morning visiting each school building, checking in with students and staff as the new school year got underway.

Guthrie Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said the first day appeared to go smoothly, with plenty of excitement among younger students and a few sleepy faces among older students.

“It is always fun on the first day to see the gleam in the eyes of the elementary students and to also see how many of the high school and junior high students still look sleepy after 10 a.m.,” Simpson said.

One of the more memorable moments of the morning came as pre-K students began adjusting to their first experience in a school setting.

“The touching times are when the pre-K students become comfortable with their first school experience,” Simpson said.

Simpson also said the district’s overall start to the school year was smooth, including the newly renovated Guthrie High School parking lot.

“The parking lot changes at the High School seemed to run very smooth,” Simpson said. “Given time, everyone will become more comfortable with the new process.”

The new high school parking configuration features new traffic patterns, one-way lanes, and designated areas for buses, student drop-off, and parking.

With the first day now in the books, students and staff begin another school year across Guthrie Public Schools.
