Shawnee too much for Guthrie Freshmen

Thursday evening was simply just a night to forget for the girls and boys freshmen squads as they hosted the Shawnee Wolves inside the Guthrie High School Gymnasium.

In the girls game the Shawnee girls won 39-16 and the Shawnee boys completed the sweep with a 66-42 win in the night-cap.

The Lady Jays (0-4) were outscored in the first quarter, 11-5, but Shawnee opened the game up in the second quarter by scoring all 12 of the quarter’s points to lead 23-5 at the half.

Guthrie could manage just one field goal in the third quarter and trailed 35-7 heading into the final quarter. The Lady Jays started the quarter on a 4-0 run with buckets from Cassidy Jones and outscored the Lady Wolves 9-4 in the final seven minutes.

Jones finished with a team high eight points followed by Alma Robinson’s six points and Jessica Woods two.

Quick start for Shawnee dooms Jays

Shawnee was very consistent by scoring 19-points each in the first three-quarters. The Wolves took advantage with quick baskets in their transition offense.

The Wolves jumped out to a 15-4 lead and finished the opening quarter with a 19-8 advantage and expanded it to the half with a 38-21 advantage.

Guthrie, who has dropped their last two games after starting the season 2-0, could not overcome Shawnee’s size down low in the paint.

Bailey Nichols paced the Jays with 12 points followed by Jeremy Brown’s nine points. Rounding out the scoring was  Jacob Chappell and Landon Solorio each with six points, Dakota Leach added five, and Reed Roberts finished with four.

Guthrie returns back home Monday when the entertain El Reno. The girl’s game begins at 6:00 with the boys to follow at 7:00.
