Long ball provides first win of the season

The Guthrie Baseball team collected 12 hits in their first two games of the season, but then erupted for 13 in a five inning run rule win over El Reno Monday evening.

Hayden Seifert has hit safely in two of the first three games with three total hits.

Guthrie was supplied with seven players gathering hits, including junior’s Hayden Seifert and John Clark hitting their first home runs of the season in a 13-4 win on a gray, cloudy afternoon. Clark finished the day reaching base in all four of his trips and finished 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
Freshmen shortstop Jacob Chappell started the game with a double and was brought home on Clark’s single to give the Jays a 1-0 advantage, but only to see the Indians tie the game in the home half of the inning.

The BlueJays opened the game with seven runs in the top of the second. With one out, Cody Reihs singled and then stole second base. Sophomore Kasey Gates followed that with a single to put runners on the corners. Freshmen Donovan Jordan’s double to give the Jays a 2-1 lead. Chappell was then walked and Dutton brought two more runs in with a double to increase the lead to 4-1. The inning was topped by Seifert’s 3-run home run and Clark’s solo blast to finish the inning with a 8-1 advantage.

Guthrie (1-2) collected the seven runs on six hits after sending 10 batters to the plate.

Dutton, Seifert, Clark, Gates, and Jordan finished with a multi-hit game while Chappell, Seifert, Clark, Reihs, ang Gates each scored twice.

After a scoreless third inning, the Jays put five more runs on the Indians with three hits and took advantage of three free passes. Gates highlighted the inning with a 3-run RBI double and later scored on Jordan’s single.

Freshmen hurler Reed Roberts (1-1) picked up his first varsity win by throwing all five innings.

El Reno added three runs in the fifth, but was not enough to avoid the run-rule.

Both teams return to Squires Field to conclude their two-game conference series. First pitch is set for 4:30.

Schedule change: Friday March 11th’s game with McGuinness has been canceled due to the Irish leaving to play out-of-state during spring break next week.
