Talk about it in The Corral
One of the many local towns that has been a successful recruiting stop for the Oklahoma State coaching staff in the past decade is Guthrie, Oklahoma. The Bluejay football tradition has produced a number of top prospects, two of which have signed with Oklahoma State in the form of David Washington and Kye Staley.
The next in line of top caliber prospects to emerge from Guthrie (OK) High School is offensive line prospect Blake Belcher who is receiving strong interest from a number of college programs and is poised to receive what one would think would be a number of scholarship offers.
Belcher did not attend OSU’s most recent junior day this past weekend but did take part in the first one back in January and talked with us this week about how that experience went.
“I liked a lot of things,” he said. “Of course their facilities are state of the art. They were by far the best I’ve been to that I’ve seen and also the coaching staff was really great. We had an offensive lineman from my high school go there so that’s kind of a connection I have with them so it’s pretty neat. But like I said they’re facilities were the best I’ve seen by far.”
Belcher next commented on what some of the biggest highlights of the trip were for him.
“The facilities for one, like the weight room of course, the training table, their cafeteria place. Then the coaching staff and just the philosophy of how they want to coach you and how they do things I liked a lot. They have team meetings set for each time of the day and they’re just real organized with how they do things and it’s pretty cool up there,” he said.
The former OSU offensive lineman Belcher referred to earlier is David Washington who evidently stays in touch with the talented high schooler.
“Big Dave, he went there and he was an offensive lineman. I don’t really talk to Kye much but I talk to Big Dave all the time about how the coaching staff is and stuff like that,” he said.
Should Belcher end up signing with Oklahoma State he would also be coached by the same position coach that coached Washington in the person of Joe Wickline.
“He’s really cool, he’s a lot like our coaches at Guthrie,” said Belcher. “He’s real personal and tries to get to know you a lot but then again he’ll push you on the field and stuff like that so I really like Coach Wickline. We’ve got a pretty good relationship going on.”
While still in the early stages of the recruiting process, Belcher indicated that he definitely holds the Oklahoma State program in high regard at this point.
“Actually, they’re right near the top, I really like them. Our coach uses their blocking schemes so I already know a lot of what they do as far as like they run a lot of zone blocking and we run the exact same stuff they do. But yeah like I said they’re right near the top, I really like Oklahoma State,” he said.
It appears to be only a matter of time before Belcher nabs his first few scholarship offers and as he alludes to it seems to be a matter of just reaffirming that he has completely recovered from a broken ankle.
“It’s fully healed and I’m back to dong regular activities. From what I can tell I’m back to 100 percent on it so it’s really doing good. I’ve talked to a couple of schools that said they’ll give me an offer once they see how my foot has healed up. But as far as me being recruited the hardest it’d probably be Kansas or Missouri,” he finished.
