Student-athlete in stable condition after collapsing during basketball game in Mulhall

A Dover High School basketball player is recovering in stable but critical condition after collapsing during a Thursday morning game at the Mulhall-Orlando Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Randy Vitalis, a Dover boys’ basketball team member, had just scored and was running back on defense when he suddenly collapsed on the court. The incident occurred during a first-round matchup against Life Christian Academy at Mulhall-Orlando High School.

According to witnesses, Dover coaches, assisted by a Life Christian Academy player, immediately administered CPR and used a defibrillator(AED) to restore Vitalis’ heartbeat. Emergency responders from Guthrie EMS were called to the scene at 11:30 a.m. and arrived at 11:45 a.m. Vitalis was then transported to Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City.

According to the Kingfisher Times, doctors at Children’s Hospital reported that Vitalis suffered cardiac arrest caused by an abnormal heartbeat. While the condition’s underlying cause is still unknown, medical staff are conducting a series of tests, including a CT scan and ultrasound. Vitalis is currently sedated, on a ventilator, and under observation in the intensive care unit.

Doctors informed family members that the swift use of the defibrillator likely saved Vitalis’ life. His blood pressure is stable, and doctors are closely monitoring his condition.
