The weather finally gave way for the finals of the 5A State Tennis Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. The start of the tournament was delayed by seven hours on Friday.
Once the courts were squeged off, the Jays sent Hank Hudson and Josh Wehrenberg into the No. 1 doubles consolation finals after two wins over Carl Albert. Barrett Porter fell into the seventh place game in No. 2 singles. The Guthrie doubles team was the seven overall seed.
Hudson and Wehrenberg dropped their first match of the state tournament by Deer Creek in an upset 5-7, 6-3, 6-7. The duo had previously beaten the Antlers twice this season.
In the next match, they took down Claremore in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 to send them to the consolation quarters.
The next day since they had been upset the day before they had to play the 5th seed and last years state runners-up Carl Albert. It was a terrific match as Hudson and Wehrenberg eliminated Carl Albert 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. In the quarters, they soundly beat Tulsa Edison the 8th seed 6-2, 6-1. In the final round they were defeated by the third seed McAlester 6-2, 6-4.
Porter lost his first round to the number two seed Ada 6-0, 6-1. In the second round he defeated Skaitook 6-4, 6-2. In the elimination round he defeated Altus 7-6, 7-5.
“Barrett made an incredible comeback being down 0-5 in the second set,” head coach Mary Hudson said.
Braden Wagoner from Altus had beaten Porter three times previously in the year. He lost his next match to Durant in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 1-6. In the last match for 7th place he was beaten by Senator Inhofe grandson from Booker T. Washington 6-1, 6-2.
