“Tuesdays with Morrie” runs throughout February at the Pollard

“Tuesday’s with Morrie,” the touching autobiographical hit by Mitch Albom, opened at the Pollard Theatre Feb. 3 and runs until Feb. 25. The production is a mid-season replacement of the originally scheduled “Laughter on the 23rd Floor.”

‘Morrie’ is an extraordinary piece of writing that has touched its readers and audiences for 15 years. Albom infused this true story with humor, honesty and heart. It is this type of theater the Pollard takes great pride in sharing with its audiences,” said artistic director W. Jerome Stevenson.

“Tuesdays with Morrie” is the story of Mitch Albom, an accomplished journalist driven solely by his career, and Morrie Schwartz, his former college professor. Sixteen years after graduation, Mitch happens to catch Morrie’s appearance on a television news program and learns his old professor is battling Lou Gehrig’s disease. The pair is reunited and a simple visit turns into a weekly pilgrimage and a last class in the meaning of life.

Co-authored by Jeffrey Hatcher (“Three Viewings”) and Mitch Albom (“The Five People You Meet in Heaven” and “Have a Little Faith”), “Tuesdays with Morrie” was a fixture on The New York Times Bestseller List for more than four years. It sold more than five million copies and inspired an Emmy-winning television film presented by Oprah Winfrey.

The change in schedule was tied to efforts to ensure the organization’s continued artistic success while remaining fiscally watchful during continuing economic turmoil.

“Our primary goal is to make the strongest artistic contribution possible to the Oklahoma arts community. In a year of such economic uncertainty, we felt a more intimate production was called for,” explained Stevenson.

“Tuesdays With Morrie” features Pollard resident company members Michael Edsel as Mitch Albom and James A. Hughes as Morrie Schwartz, under the direction of James Ong.
