Despite two Guthrie BlueJays crossing the regional line first, the BlueJay cross country team finished second in the Class 5A regional held in Tulsa.
The two-time defending 5A state champions advance to this weeks state meet. The event will be held at Mitch Park in Edmond. The 5A boys race is set to begin at 10:45 a.m.
Guthrie’s Walker Cross, who will be looking to all-state this week for the first time, continued a great season by capturing the individual regional championship with a run of 16:56. His good friend and fellow senior teammate Jonathan Ogan was three seconds behind at 16:59 in the 5k event.
Senior Hunter Sallee was just outside the top 10 with a 12th place with a run of 18:12. Brandon Greenlee (18:37) was 22nd in scoring, Evan Watts (19:07) was 31st and the last score to count was Leroy Unruh (20.09) at 62nd.
Tahlequah was aided by four runners finishing in the top 10 with a team low 49 points to win the team title and was followed by Guthrie’s 68 and Tulsa Memorial’s distant 106 points.
Deer Creek, who have been the favorites all season to win the 5A crown, easily won the 5A West regional held in Norman. Both Guthrie and Tahlequah are the next two teams to contend with the Antlers.
Toney takes 19th overall
Lauren Toney continues to improve each week and in her regional run finished 19th overall with a time of 13:58 in the two-mile race.
“LT” has been the only Lady Jay cross country runner this season.
The Class 5A state meet is set for 10:00 a.m.
