The Guthrie Bluejays will take their longest road trip of the season Friday night as they head to Durant to extend their winning streak to four games and strengthen their position in the Class 5A District 1 playoff race.
Kickoff between the Bluejays and Lions is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Guthrie enters the contest with a 5-3 overall record and a 3-1 mark in district play, sitting in second place behind undefeated Carl Albert. Durant enters the matchup at 2-6 overall and 1-3 in district play.
After opening the season with two losses, Guthrie has won five of its last six games, with its only setback during that stretch coming in a narrow 17-16 loss at Carl Albert.
The Bluejays have since responded with three consecutive district victories, defeating Midwest City 49-20, Lawton 30-6 and Noble 28-21.
Last Friday, Guthrie held off Noble at Jelsma Stadium in a game that saw the Bears challenge the Bluejays throughout the night.
Guthrie’s defense came away with seven sacks against Noble, including two each from Davion Whitehorn and Gabe Jackson.
The victory improved Guthrie’s district record to 3-1 and kept the Bluejays in position to host a first-round playoff game.
Durant, meanwhile, is looking to snap a three-game losing streak.
The Lions are coming off a 42-16 loss to Lawton after falling behind 35-10 in the first half. Durant has also suffered a 49-0 defeat against Carl Albert during district play.
The Bluejays will look to continue their recent defensive success against a Durant team that has struggled to generate consistent offense.
Guthrie’s turnaround has been especially important in the district standings.
Carl Albert leads District 5A-1 with a 4-0 record, followed by Guthrie at 3-1. Midwest City is third at 3-2, while Lawton occupies fourth place at 2-2.
With two district games remaining, Guthrie controls an important part of its postseason positioning. Victories over Durant and Duncan would give the Bluejays a 5-1 district record and put them in a strong position to secure a home playoff game. In another option, if Carl Albert were to defeat both Midwest City and Lawton to finish the season, Guthrie would secure second place.
However, the Bluejays cannot afford to overlook a Durant team playing at home on Senior Night.
Following Friday’s matchup, Guthrie will return to Jelsma Stadium on November 6 to host Duncan in the regular-season finale.
Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by kickoff at 7 p.m.
