Watch: Guthrie opens up the playoffs in Duncan

Many Class 5A football fans and media members just knew the Guthrie Bluejay football program would be making the long haul to Altus for a first round playoff game. However, the Duncan Demons had other ideas.

Duncan surprised the fourth-ranked Bulldogs with a 42-21 Senior Night win to claim the second spot in district 5A-1 and a home game against the Jays.

For Duncan, the win over Altus is their marquee win on the season to finish 9-1 in the regular season. Duncan took advantage of two first half turnovers from Altus, resulting in 14 points and halftime lead of 35-14.

The Demons started their season by winning their first seven games on the schedule, which has helped prevailed them to their best season since 1997. That year that started the season by going 8-0.

Their lone setback came on Oct. 18 with a road loss to second ranked Ardmore, 34-7.

In Week 8, Duncan removed some frustrations by taking down Lawton MacArthur, 24-13, for the first time in nine seasons.

Duncan, on offense, is led by their quarterback Jaxon Gregston, running back JJ Harris and athlete Tate Wilkins.

Harris, who also plays at linebacker on defense, played junior high football in Guthrie before moving to Duncan just before his freshmen season. Harris was arguably the best player for the junior high Jays.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. on 93.7 FM.
