The Guthrie BlueJay wrestling team hit the mat for the first time in the 2011-2012 season in Kingfisher and came away with a convincing win.
The Jays took advantage of five forfeits and four falls in the 62-18 win over the Jackets Thursday evening. The Junior High got in the win column as well with a 41-36 win.
Guthrie enters the season ranked third in the 5A coaches poll tournament rankings and fourth in the dual coaches rankings. A season ago, Guthrie tied for fourth in the state tournament at the OKC fair grounds.
Jumping out to 1-0 starts with falls were Timothy O’Connor, Jared Ball, Tyler Mahan and Conner Howard. Bryan Dutton and Devin Bilyeu each started with the season with technical falls while Andrew Toney went the distance with a 12-10 decision.
Landry Chappell, who recently signed with Oklahoma State, and John Davison did not suit out for the season opener.
Head Coach Jack O’Connor’s BlueJays will be back on the mat Friday in the Putnam City Tournament and will begin their home season (high school and Junior High) Thursday, December 15 when they host Perkins. Mat time is set for 6:00. The Junior High travels to Shawnee today for a dual tournament.

Is Dutton going to wrestle all year at 170 or is he going to cut down? What is Chappell planning on wrestling at? Howard is good and needs to be in the lineup? Who’s going to drop to 195?
Trey – almost certain Bryan wrestle up (in weight) because of what Kingfisher had to offer. My understanding is that Landry may try and move down to 195 this season. If not, expect him back at 215.
I will have a lot more information by this Thursday before their home dual with Perkins.
That makes sense. He definitely has the talent to wrestle bigger guys. Seems like a lot of weight for Landry to cut, but if he’s signed to wrestle in college, he might as well get his body fat as lean as possible and get used to it now.
