Dutton takes top honors; Jays place in talented field

Anytime you participate in a Oklahoma wrestling tournament North of Guthrie you better be prepared to bring your best.

Guthrie Coach Jack O'Connor's BlueJays will have a busy week when they host El Reno and Deer Creek.

In a talented field, the Guthrie squad finished seventh out of 28 teams with a score of 118.5. The top spot went to Allen, Texas (214) followed by 5A’s second ranked Collinsville (199.5), 4th ranked Deer Creek (196.5), 4A’s top ranked Sallisaw (157), 3A’s top ranked Perry (142), and 4A’s third ranked Cushing (139).

Sophomore Bryan Dutton captured the 140 pound weight division with an epic double overtime, 2-1, victory over Weatherford’s Don Ervin, who a season ago, finished runner-up in the state tournament.

Dutton, a third place state tournament finisher himself, earlier this season won the Putnam City tournament and with his latest win improves to 16-1 on the season and a 51-6 career high school record.

Perhaps a preview of this years 5A state championship at 215, Guthrie’s Landry Chappell saw a fellow competitor in Deer Creek’s Alex Christensen in the championship match.

Christensen, whose step mom, Mary Fallin, was sworn in as Oklahoma’s governor on Monday morning, had a 4-3 lead when Chappell took a chance to get the win, but failed and took an 8-3 loss for his first setback of the season (8-1).

Assistant coach Scott Pope simply stated, “the most exciting heavyweight match I have seen in a long time” when talking about the 285 match between John Davison and Vinita’s Casey Piguet.

Davison was able to push the pace, but Piguet was able to hold off the Guthrie heavyweight for a 5-2 decision.

The fourth BlueJay to compete in the finals was Michael Conner at 171. Conner faced Deer Creek’s Nolan Boyd. Boyd, who finished second in tackles in 5A behind Chappell, took the 9-0 decision. Conner is now 13-2 on the season.

In the consolation round, Dennis Murphy finished sixth, at 152. Murphy nearly had a pin, but was later pinned by Vinita’s Michael Sunday.

Guthrie, who is currently ranked ninth by 5A coaches in dual action, has an important week as they host dual matches inside the GHS gymnasium. Tuesday the Jays host El Reno for Homecoming before hosting Deer Creek on Thursday evening. Both matches start at 6:00 with the junior high.
