The Guthrie baseball team was shooting for a five game winning streak and a ticket to the championship game of the Southern Oklahoma Spring Break Shootout. However, Lone Grove had a different idea.
Pitcher and lead off man Cody Sewell proved to be the difference for Lone Grove as they finish Pool B with a 3-0 record with a 7-3 win Friday evening.

Sewell pitched seven complete innings and was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs.
Guthrie jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in their first at bat after Corbin Crockett drew a base on ball and then advance on a Bryan Dutton single before John Cotton picked up the RBI.
The Jays got at least one hit every inning outside of the third, but left 10 men on base.
The Longhorns tied the game at one in the fourth when they collected two hits and then took the lead for good with another run in the fifth when Sewell lead off with a double before stealing third.
Guthrie threaten in the sixth inning with the bases loaded with just one out, but were unable to push any runs across the plate.
Lone Grove put the game out of reach with five runs on two hits in the sixth inning. Guthrie, however, went down fighting by scoring two runs in the seventh, but left the bases loaded.
Six different Jays collected hits and were highlighted by Dutton’s two singles. Jaden Chappell and Hayden Seifert each had RBI singles. John Cotton and Dustin Bowman added singles in the final frame.
Guthrie is now 6-2 on the season and gets back into conference play with a road trip to Western Heights, on Monday, and then again with both teams, on Tuesday, at Squires Field. Both games are scheduled with a 4:30 start.

slideshow LONE GROVE — Teams broke out the wooden bats for the Southern Oklahoma Spring Break Shootout, hosted in Lone Grove. Things got started Thursday afternoon when the Durant Lions faced the Guthrie Bluejays. It was a back-and-forth battle that saw the Bluejays beat the Lions with a walk-off home run 6-5.
The Bluejays took a 1-0 lead in the second inning due to an error after the outfielder after a dropped fly ball. But the Lions answered back in the third inning.
Dylan Spoon led off the inning with a free pass from the pitcher after being beaned in the head with a rising fastball. Then Ruben Ramos laid a perfect bunt down the third base line and the Guthrie pitcher made a throwing error that allowed Ramos on base and Spoon to cross home plate. Josh Brown would step up and knock one into the outfield for a sac-fly that brought Ramos home. Later in the inning, the bases were loaded and Tyler Hendley scored on a free pass. The Lions led 3-1.
The Bluejays answered back and tied the game with a liner up the middle, RBI-triple and a wild pitch that put Guthrie back into the game as it was knotted at 3 apiece.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Bluejays took a 4-3 lead after another RBI-triple.
The Lions bounced back in the second inning after Josh Brown hit a blazing liner over the center fielder’s head. Hendley then drew a walk and Derrick Haworth was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Kevin Williams faced a full count with two outs when he hammered a two-run single into left field for a 5-4 lead.
The Bluejays, however, came back and tied it the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lions couldn’t answer back in the top of the seventh and allowed the Bluejays a chance to win the game in the bottom inning. And they did just that with a walk off home run that gave Guthrie the win.

Randy Bruce of the Durant Daily Democrat did a great job of writing this story that you commented on by posting, but you forgot to publish the entire story. Here are the three paragraph’s you left out:
The Lions (5-5) returned to pool play today, beginning with the Lone Grove Longhorns noon at Lone Grove. Durant follows that game with a 2:30 game against Broken Bow.
All of Saturday’s games will be played at Ardmore, beginning with fourth-place at 11 a.m.
Durant returns home Tuesday, March 23 against McAlester.

Those of you who want all the players who deserve it to be highlited for their great playing talent need to look for another avenue, this town won’t get it for you until there is a shift in power!!!
