Callins plays big for Jays in three-way scrimmage

If the goals for Guthrie football was to stay healthy, score touchdowns and keep their opponents out of the end zone in the first scrimmage of the season then they did just that.

The BlueJays hosted Douglass and Bishop Kelley in a three-way scrimmage, at Langston University, Friday evening. Each team got 24 snaps on offense and 24 snaps on defense.

As expected the scrimmage proved to be physical for the Jays with the defending 4A state champion Trojans and a Kelley team that is usually a lock in the 5A playoffs.

Guthrie scored on both the Douglass and Kelley defenses and forced turnovers on both offenses. Kai Callins did his part in providing sparks on both sides of the ball.

The Comets broke off a big run on the Jays defense and flipped the field by getting inside the 20-yard line. However, on a fourth down play, Callins picked off the Comet quarterback at the goal line to keep the Comets out of the end zone.

The BlueJay offense then hit the field against Douglass and were able to find pay dirt. Junior quarterback Bryan Dutton hit fellow junior wide out Jarvis Moore for a nice 25-yard pass and catch to move across midfield. After piling up 20 more yards of offense, Callins took off for a 35-yard touchdown run on his first snap at quarterback.

The highlight of the night however came from, once again, Callins. The shifty sophomore exploded up the middle for a 70-yard score against the Comets. Callins, who took the hand off at running back, got a key block down field from a Jays receiver to secure the score.

Guthrie will have the weekend off before hitting the practice field next week. The Jays will travel to Piedmont for the final scrimmage of the season on Thursday.
