The Guthrie football program has seen their 2010 schedule take a make over. The make over has a more competitive look to it with a new non-district and district.
The 2010 schedule will be kind in the beginning with the first two games at home and the first three of four at Jelsma Stadium. However, three of the last four will be on the road.
The Jays move into Class 5A, District 1 with Carl Albert and Noble, but after that five new teams will make up the district. Ada, Deer Creek, El Reno, Southeast, and Western Heights will all be new members of 5A-1 for the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
The non-district schedule for the next two years is, perhaps, more intriguing. Guthrie will begin the season, at the Rock, with Duncan (September 3) in a re-match of last years first round playoff game. Ponca City enters Jelsma in Week 2 and the first road game will be with the Enid Plainsmen (Coach Scott Mick’s alma mater) to finish the non-district portion of the schedule.
Off the schedule are the Shawnee Wolves. A staple of a series over the years with the Jays whether it was a district or non-district game, but the Wolves are moving to 6A and will schedule differently in the non-distrtict.
Also, off the Jays schedule are McGuinness and Piedmont. The Wildcats struggled to win a game two years ago and could just manage 3-wins a season ago. Guthrie has won all three meetings with Piedmont and have won handily 120-14 in those game combined. Guthrie and Piedmont will scrimmage each other, in Piedmont, on August 26. The first scrimmage will be at Douglas on August 20th.
The last time a 6A team was on the Jays schedule was the Stillwater Pioneers. Stillwater made it a very lopsided series in those last few years of the series and Guthrie knew they had to do something different. So they did and it was a step in the right direction in building the program.
The most important part of the schedule is the district. While there are no strangers to the Jays it does have an unique look.
The district opener will be with Deer Creek, at home, before traveling to Ada the following week. The Jays have played Deer Creek in the regular and post seasons before, but have only scrimmage Ada in the last few years.
Noble will be homecoming this season on October 8th and the following week the Jays take the show on the road to Carl Albert.
El Reno will be homecoming in Week 8 before the Jays finish up the regular season with Western Heights and Southeast. The first round of the playoffs is set for November 12th.
