Nichols sparks Guthrie en route to first win

The boys basketball jumped out to a quick start in Oklahoma City with an 11-4 start, but held off the Western Heights ball club for their first win of the season.

BasketballGuthrie outscored the Jets 25-15 in the first half, but the Jets were able to return the favor in the second half (32-28) but was not enough to overcome the BlueJays.

Guthrie improves to 1-1 overall and in conference play.

The BlueJays were led by senior point guard Edgar Baez with 14 points, but it was fellow senior Bailey Nichols that gave the Jays the early advantage.

Nichols came out smoking by drilling two three-pointers and two field goals to finish with 10 first quarter points and finished with 13.

In the third quarter, Guthrie built up a 36-22 advantage with 2:40 remaining, but the Jets pulled within four (46-42) with 2:45 to play in the game. However, Guthrie was able to keep their distance.

Western Heights did not help themselves as they finished 6-of-15 from the free throw line, including 3-of-11 in the second half. Meanwhile, the Jays shot 7-of-10.
