Accused killer bound over for trial in shooting death of family member

The man being held in the Logan County Jail without bond for killing his 46-year-old family member was in court this week for a preliminary hearing.

Cody Bernard Scruggs, now 32, was charged with first-degree murder in January 2021. He’s accused of shooting Michael Cole, in the backyard of a home near Coltrane and Simmons. Related article: Update: Homicide suspect in custody

The victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

Logan County deputies said Scruggs ran to his home across the street from the shooting scene but ran off and started a manhunt.

A person calling 911 said, “We were all telling each other bye, and he pulled out a gun and started shooting at him. I know he has a gun and ran off. He is somewhere in the neighborhood.”

Scruggs was taken into custody the following day after an 18-hour search.

On Monday, Scruggs appeared before a Logan County judge for his preliminary hearing.

The court heard from one witness from the State Medical Examiner’s Office and ruled there was enough evidence for a trial to be held.

Scruggs remains in jail without bond. His next court appearance is set for November 17.
